I. From Real World
What is the real world like? It is full of all kinds of people’s tension and imbalance, but the voices of this group of people’s cries and calls for help are soon covered by the next group’s sounds. No one actually hears the needs of others. Yes, including designers.
We have been emphasizing the importance of research for designing. And in recent years, Design Researcher, as an independent position, in the design field, has developed to the real world to work with designers.
Designers are sensitive professions and are a group of sentimental people. But for this complex and diverse world, it is not enough for us to only have empathy. We also need dirty hands and feet on dirt. The most mattering thing is sharp eyes.
II. With Real Interaction
The electronic screen is filled with our current daily life. Everywhere and all the time, we are dealing with the two-dimensional screen. We laugh at the screen, and then click to share out our virtual link; we grimace at the screen, wondering whether this selfie is enough to attract the attention of another screen; we say “I love you, good night” to the screen, not even look at it.
Sure, The designers designed these scenes aggressively. Is everyone shared sincerely? Do you have a genuine interaction with your own emotions? Maybe.
It is pathetic that interaction nowadays is almost around screens. Real interaction is warm as a hug, is touching as a smile, even from a stranger. It is ridiculous that many designers imagined a screen could solve every problem, and convenience is the top thing.
Real interaction is about communication, among people or human and objects, in a word, between the real world. By telling this, the real interaction will fit in a right form (of course, the screen is included) and evoke people’s emotions, sad or joyful. Stronger engagement, the better.
III. For Real People
Universal design is not a new concept. It can even be said that it has a certain history. But we did not pass on and update our understanding of universal design in the current society. Even the designers ourselves are puzzled by all kinds of bubbles in the commercial culture. After all, designers are also in the flood of this impetuous place.
Real people are not only those are socially active, but those stay away from the mainstream. Showing your care for the users is the key to designing for real people. To be specific, we are not only design for the physical wants but psychological needs.
IV. “Make it until you REAL it.”
Stop “Fake it until you make it”, But “Make it until you REAL it”.
Real is an adjective and a verb as well.
When designers were not empowered, we tend to fake things and imagine they’re going to be perfect in the real world. Believe it or not, many designers stop at the ‘faking it’ place and are not willing to move on. It is a kind of poisonous slogan, especially to young designers, keeping telling them that they will make it one day. The truth is, designers are more likely to live in the fantasy. So it’s time to stop this slogan. Start making things and fail, again and over again until you REAL it in the REAL world for REAL people.
